Nicole: What is reality? Well that’s all up to your perception. Everyone’s reality is somewhat different and at the start of the movie Phil’s and Rita’s realities couldn’t be any more opposite. Phil tries to conform to Rita’s realities in hopes that it would get her to like him.
Rita wants a man who is humble, kind, and thinks we should all live in the mountains. Phil is quite opposite from all of Rita’s ideals. He thinks he’s a hotshot reporter and is rude to everyone he talks to with the use of his sarcasm.
As Phil repeats the days he realizes all the things he must do and be in order for Rita to “fall in love” with him. He begins to try to conform to these realities, but by how is this fulfilling?
Cody:
Wow, never thought of it like that. Yeah, he is trying to fit into Rita realities, but for what? Just to get with her for one day?
Part of his journey in this movie is creating a better reality for himself. At first he merely pretends to see the same reality as Rita, but he finds out that this isn’t working because his ulterior motives (trying to sleep with her) are too different from the reality he is trying to live in, which is to just be a kind and selfless person.
Nicole:
Yup. In the end, he is able to win her over because his experiences with the many repeated days had made him focus on helping others. For example, feeding the homeless man, catching the falling kid, and performing the Heimlich maneuver of the choking guy. His realities shift from trying to get the girl to using his ability to know what’s going to happen for the benefit of others.
